Is Your Roof Ready For Summer?

Your poor roof! Hammered with weather all throughout the year. Heavy snowfall in February, hail in September, and high winds just about any time you can name.

But the summer sun’s rays can also cause issues. The UV rays damage shingles, making them brittle and more prone to breakage during storms. But the summer is also a great time to tackle problems that you notice — it’s prime roofing weather.

Inspect The Roof To Note Its Condition

The winter is hard on roofs, but what can you do? You can take a look at the roof as soon as it warms up and make sure it stays in great shape. Keep an eye out for loosened shingles (the most common form of winter damage.) You can usually tell shingles are loose when you see a strip on the shingle that isn’t faded as much as the rest. Do An Attic Check

It’s never a bad idea to go up into your attic and inspect the roof from the inside. If you can see daylight through the roof, you know that’s a bad sign! But you also want to keep an eye out for discoloration on the decking or rafters that may indicate a small leak or a humidity problem. Small leaks might start off small, but they never stop growing until they are fixed. By catching them at this stage, you can avoid some expensive interior repairs.

Consider Extra Attic Insulation

If your upper floor gets a little warmer than it should, it’s because the heat in your attic is being transferred through the ceiling. Extra insulation (and a tightly sealed ceiling) can prevent that. Although it’s a very cheap renovation with a big upside, it’s can be difficult to do if it isn’t easy to get into the attic.  But if you are already having a roof replacement or repairs done, that is the ideal time to add insulation. Rather than having to go through the attic entrance, they will be able to access the attic from above, making quick work of the job!
